On Friday, May 25, the teacher's labor union SIMAR at 8 p.m. will hold their general annual meeting. During the meeting they will elect a new board and present the 2011 financial report, the secretary's report and the 2012-2013 management plan. The new board will lead the organization for the 2012-2014 period.

Arikok National Park organized a "boa derby" from April 16 through May 16. The park reports 138 boa constrictors were brought in, which is triple of what they received last year. They paid Afl. 10 per live boa received. Park employee Salvador Franken explained that people island-wide brought in the snakes and the park was considering to host another derby in October/November.

The youth parliament has announced it will host an interscholastic debate on May 29, 2012 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Cas di Cultura. Participating schools are: Mon Plaisir College, Juliana School, St. Augustinus College and one other MAVO high school. Each school will have five representatives debating on different topics of interest to the youth and the community in general.

The smartcard project is being introduced at Arubus in July, the company's director Theo Croes explained this week in an interview. The project is not going to have any influence on the company's 60-plus program, which awards 40 free trips per month to elders. The tariff for school children remains unchanged at Afl. 125. Other passengers can purchase their smartcard at 28 outlets island-wide, minimum purchase is Afl. 5. The price per route for locals is Afl. 2.25. The price for island visitors is Afl. 4 per route. Arubus transports approximately 3000 passengers per year; 30% are tourists.

Thursday around 11:30 a.m. a six-year-old girl got in trouble while swimming, swallowing a lot of water. A man immediately took action, pulling the child out of the water and administering CPR. Paramedics transported the child to hospital. The child was conscious and in stable condition, thanks to the anonymous good Samaritan's swift action.
