Friday evening just after 10:30 p.m. four people were injured in a car accident at the Mahuma intersection. Police closed off the road. One victim was on the ground and three in the car, of which two were stuck in the car and badly injured. One of the victims passed away during the night.
Eye witnesses said the burgundy car (A-54176) was speeding, the driver lost control and smashed the car into the security barrier at the Mahuma bridge. The passenger side of the car was destroyed. Fire department rescue workers got the two victims that were stuck out of the car. Four ambulances were escorted by police to the hospital. An investigation is ongoing. The Dutch Ministry of Defense also issued a statement on the accident as the men are Dutch Marines stationed at the base in Savaneta. The statement said that one man died and another remains in critical condition.
