The prime minister announced Friday morning in a press conference that Ecopetrol has cancelled their meeting with the government as they said they needed more time to evaluate a potential joint venture or purchase of the refinery on Aruba, currently owned by Valero of San Antonio, Texas. The meeting was supposed to have taken place this week. Prime Minister Mike Eman added that in order to try to keep the refinery open, the government was helping Valero find a partner that has crude, or another company to purchase the refinery from Valero. The government has approached among others PDVSA of Venezuela, Ecopetrol in Colombia and Petrobras from Brazil, as well as those countries' energy ministers. Petrobras earlier this month said it was not interested in a partnership or purchase of the refinery simply because they were concentrating their efforts within their own borders at this time. Valero said it will announce a decision next week concerning the refinery. The refinery has not been a profitable undertaking for Valero for quite some time now.
