"Old" oil ended up Monday in the sewerage and Tuesday already reached the purification plant at Bubali Plas. Engineer Paul Denters of the Department of Public Works, D.O.W., said that actions are being taken to reverse this contamination. Denters explained that the oil would have a negative effect on the microbes that are the basis of the purification process and a stop of the purification system might lead to foul odor spreading in the area of the Bubali Plas, among others.
The police corps and environmental police have started an investigation into the origin of the oil, it was concluded that the oil entered the sewage system in Emanstraat, next to Mai Store. The oil might have been dumped in the sewerage by a truck, Denters said. Fifteen loads of oil mixed with some water were transported to Valero Refinery, which has agreed to help take care of it.
