Prime Minister Mike Eman, Labor Minister Otmar Oduber and Minister of Finance Mike de Meza met with 100 of the island’s largest private and public companies, lobbying for job positions to accommodate employees who will be laid off by Valero in the coming months.
It is expected that more than 400 people will be laid off as Valero will no longer be reopening the refinery, no buyer has been found for the facilities and Valero will continue operations as a transshipment company. Aruba Bankers Association, including all local banks, has already issued a notification to all Valero employees who have loans with them to contact their account managers and start considering a different payment arrangement.
