The Boa Constrictor has become a threat to the local fauna, including the endemic Shoco - burrowing owl. In an attempt to eradicate the boa, Aruba is organizing an "Accion Boa" from April 16 through May 16. As encouragement, Afl. 10 will be paid to Boa hunters for each live Boa Constrictor that they bring to Parke Nacional Arikok.
It is necessary to bring them in alive to avoid the killing of the Santanero, a local garden snake that looks like the boa, but does not grow as large and does not cause the imbalance the boa is bringing about in the island's ecosystem.
