Both suspects in the Crystal Casino chip theft remain detained. Their detention was extended for eight days. One of the suspects is the casino employee Edsel R who has been working at the casino for over 20 years. He had been acting strange and it was even said that it looked as if he was losing his mind. A total of 68 $100 chips were found in his pants pockets. Apparently he was totally disoriented and in plain sight was taking the chips and putting them in his pockets. R had also given a client 13 chips. The client, Ebby S, got 13 chips from the casino employee, he exchanged 4 and took the rest home. He later returned the 9 chips, but was still picked up by police and detained. |

Vagina Monologues in English and Papiamento on March 8 and 9 |

The world famous play Vagina Monologues will be on stage at Cas di Cultura on March 8 in Papiamento and on March 9 in English. The presentation takes place at 8 p.m. The program is being organized by Mi Cutisa foundation and the department of culture is hosting the special presentations for secondary schools in the mornings.
The Vagina Monologues is a vehicle to create awareness about violence against women and girls. This cultural exchange involves artists from Curacao and Canada bringing their art to the stage. Vagina Monologues, written by Eve Ensler, was first presented in 1996. It has been translated in more than 48 languages. It is based on Ensler’s interviews with over 200 women, who shared with her their thoughts and feelings concerning their vagina and discussions on genital observations.
Ensler grew up in a violent ambiance and is of the opinion that women’s empowerment is connected to their sexuality. She was a victim of physical and sexual abuse and began drinking and using drugs at a young age. A bartender convinced her to go to rehab where she was cured of her addiction. After marrying and divorcing the bartender, Ensler started writing. The play has been presented in Papiamento at Teatro Luna Blou on Curacao by Diana Lebacs, Lusette Verboom and Jelleke Heuvel, directed by Anja Steffens. The Canadian artists are coming to Aruba with the Aruban artist Emerita Emerencia; the actresses are Rhoma Spencer, Lauren Brotman, Grace Lyn Hung and Micheala Washburn.
Art expo and information
From March 6 to March 9, the organizers are also featuring an art expo organized by Maria Teresa Martinez, Cherry Ras and Enrita Werleman as well as an “information market” with representatives from Famia Planea, Mary Joan Foundation, Fundacion Hende Muher den Dificultad, Women’s Club of Aruba, Quota Club International of Aruba and Fundacion Respeta Mi. Otilio “Titi” Davelaar (b. June 3, 1914) had a special passion for the Papiamento language, he was an expert corrector/editor. Davelaar passed away in the early morning hours on Sunday. He had been living for some time at St. Michael Paviljoen senior citizens home in Oranjestad.
Titi was always willing to help members of the media in their jobs, correcting their use of the local language, written as well as spoken. Aruba has lost a great “papiamentista”, Papiamento expert. |
