Gary Giordano (50) remains detained in Aruba's KIA prison as the main suspect in the disappearance of his travel partner Robyn Gardner (35). Giordano reported Gardner missing on August 2, he was detained by local authorities on August 5.

He has been detained for 70 days, a hearing is scheduled for Monday, October 17, to determine if his detention will be extended or not. On Friday, after two days of extensive meetings with Giordano at KIA prison, lawyer Chris Lejuez has agreed to become the lead lawyer in Giordano's defense. According to CNN, Giordano insists that he went snorkeling with Gardner behind Nanki Club and Gardner did not return to shore with him. Authorities said Giordano is the beneficiary on a life insurance policy worth $1.5 million, which he took out a few days before their trip.

Lejuez said Giordano never changed his story and police are the ones who approached Giordano with a different theory of the events. Even after investigation, authorities "cannot prove that a crime was committed," Lejuez added. He said that while detained, Giordano is simply trying "to keep it all together" and "is feeling closed in a small space, accused of something he has not done," Lejuez added that at a certain moment in their conversation, Giordano even "started crying" out of frustration.

Lejuez is working together with the suspect's U.S. lawyer, Jose Baez. Earlier during the week, Giordano's other local lawyer, Michael Lopez submitted a petition for the immediate release of the Maryland man. A hearing has been scheduled for Monday, it is not known if Giordano will be present. Chris Lejuez has 17 years experience as a criminal defense lawyer on Aruba. When asked, Lejuez commented that he does not believe there is any similarity between the Holloway and the Gardner cases. "You had a suspect who was changing his story," he said of Van der Sloot. "In this case (Giordano, ed.) the story remains the same."
