The public prosecutor's office announces that the law on drugs since December 8, 2012 has a new article that allows the public prosecutor to assign areas where preventive searches can be carried out by police. These areas and timing are determined in consultation with the minister of justice and police chief.

The law on firearms includes a similar article that allows for preventive searches for firearms. The last time these searches took place were during the last Carnaval weekend.

On March 22, a meeting between the three parties took place and they decided on the areas where searches on drugs can take place.

The areas defined are: Palm Beach - from MooMba Beach to Westin, including the stores and  centers of entertainment across from the hotels on L.G. Smith Boulevard; and the center of Oranjestad and Madiki - from Wilhelminapark to the cruise terminal, including Hendrikstraat, Caya Betico Croes, Steenweg, Wilhelminastraat, Zoutmanstraat, Lagoenweg and Arendsstraat.

Both are areas where there are many complaints about drug dealing and usage.

The Prosecutor is authorized to, once the search area is defined, issue an order for preventive searches for a duration of 12 hours. The abovementioned areas have been appointed permanently; the order for preventive searches will be given by the prosecutor.

Residents have to keep in mind that in both areas actions will take place during which individuals will be stopped by police and will be searched at random for drug possession.

The first action will take place on Sunday, March 31 in the high rise hotel area - from MooMba Beach to Westin Hotel.
