Traffic specialist Ricardo Muller said police recorded 730 traffic accidents on Aruba in December 2012, for a total of close to 8,000 traffic accidents in the period of January - December 2012. Some 285 traffic accidents were attended to only by the insurances' road service.
During the past year police also handed out 4852 official reports for which the public prosecutor's office have already or will issue fines. Muller said the behavior in traffic, especially speeding, is to blame for most accidents and urges drivers to exercise more patience when on the road. Alcohol checks have been less over the past 12 months, because of faulty equipment, but now, with the acquisition of new breathalyzers and related equipment, police have been extremely active again in carrying out checks. The first time they went out with the new equipment police made 12 detentions in one evening. Of the twelve people detained, seven were denied the right to drive again as police confiscated their driving licenses.
