Saturday around 9:45 p.m. a 16-year-old driver ran over a man who was crossing from his house across the road towards Cafe Capri. Francisco "Pancho" Dijkhoff (69) died on the scene.

Police said there were no brake marks on the road, indicating that the man probably stepped onto the road so suddenly that the driver was not given enough time to react. The underage driver said he had been driving at a speed of 40 km/hr, but the impact on the car indicates that he must have been driving quite faster. Family members who came to the accident were heartbroken, they told reporters that Pancho had never been married nor had children and was living with and caring for his mother who had had an attack on Saturday morning and was at hospital in delicate health. Family members said they bad memories of this location, as an uncle had been killed in an accident at the same location in 1974.

Pancho is Aruba's 13th death by traffic accident for 2012.
